Overview
This procedure describes the recommended antenna and cable configuration for installing a dual-band handheld radio in a dune buggy or similar vehicle. The system is designed around the TRAM 1181 dual-band mobile antenna, which provides approximately 2.5 dB of gain and is a “no tune” antenna, meaning that it does not require manual antenna tuning after installation.
The installation consists of five primary components:

- Pre-drilled L-bracket antenna mount
- Protective screw cap for the antenna mount

The TRAM 1181 is the primary transmitting and receiving antenna for the radio system. It is mounted externally on the buggy so that the antenna has the best possible exposure to the surrounding environment. The 2.5 dB gain helps improve radio performance compared with a typical small handheld antenna. Its “no tune” design means it does not require manual adjustment for a particular frequency after installation.
Important: This antenna can be difficult to locate. It is recommended that the exact TRAM 1181 model be purchased rather than substituting a visually similar antenna without confirming its specifications.
2. Cable 1 – Antenna Feed Cable
Purpose: Connects the antenna mounted on the buggy to the inside of the vehicle.

Cable 1 is the long antenna feed cable. One end connects to the base of the externally mounted TRAM 1181 antenna. The cable is routed through the buggy and into the passenger compartment, eventually terminating underneath or near the dashboard.
Typical Routing
TRAM 1181 antenna → antenna base → through rear firewall → underneath passenger seat → forward underneath dashboard
Critical Routing Rule
Do not run the antenna cable alongside or directly against vehicle power wiring whenever possible.
Keep the antenna cable separated from battery cables, alternator wiring, ignition wiring, high-current accessory wiring, and other significant power cables.
Handling Excess Cable
If there is more cable than needed, do not cut the cable shorter unless you are specifically equipped and qualified to properly terminate the cable. Instead, take up the excess underneath the seat or another accessible location.
The excess cable may be looped, but DO NOT make tight coils. Use large, loose circular loops. Do not compress the cable tightly with zip ties.
3. Cable 2 – Handheld Radio Adapter Cable
Purpose: Connects Cable 1 to the handheld radio.

Cable 2 is the adapter used at the handheld-radio end of the installation. The factory antenna is removed from the handheld radio, and Cable 2 is connected to the antenna connection on top of the radio. Cable 2 then connects to the end of Cable 1.
Connection sequence: TRAM 1181 → Cable 1 → Cable 2 → Handheld Radio
Do not force the connector onto the radio. The connector should mate naturally with the radio’s antenna connection.
4. Antenna Mount – Pre-Drilled L-Bracket
Purpose: Provides the physical mounting point for the TRAM 1181 antenna.

The L-bracket provides a solid mounting location for the antenna. The bracket is already drilled for the antenna installation, eliminating the need to fabricate or drill the antenna mounting hole yourself.
The bracket should be mounted where it provides adequate physical support, allows the antenna to remain as vertical as practical, keeps the antenna clear of surrounding bodywork, and provides a clean route for Cable 1.
5. Protective Screw Cap
Purpose: Protects the antenna mounting connection when the TRAM 1181 antenna is removed.

The protective cap screws onto the brass antenna mounting connection when the antenna is removed. This is particularly useful when the buggy is being towed, transported, stored, or worked on.
Recommended practice: Remove the antenna, store it safely, install the protective screw cap, and remove the cap before reinstalling the antenna.
6. Installation Sequence
Step 1 – Install the Antenna Bracket
Install the pre-drilled L-bracket in the selected antenna location. Make sure the bracket is firmly secured and does not flex excessively. The antenna should ultimately stand as vertically as practical.
Step 2 – Install the TRAM 1181
Screw the TRAM 1181 antenna onto the antenna mounting connection. Tighten securely by hand according to the connector/mount manufacturer’s requirements. Do not overtighten.
Step 3 – Connect Cable 1
Connect Cable 1 to the antenna base. Verify that the connector is properly seated and secure. Do not place excessive strain on the connector.
Step 4 – Route Cable 1 Into the Buggy
Route Cable 1 from the antenna toward the interior of the buggy. A recommended routing path is antenna → rear firewall → underneath passenger seat → underneath dashboard. Protect the cable from sharp metal edges.
Step 5 – Route the Cable Away From Power Wiring
Keep Cable 1 away from vehicle electrical power wiring whenever possible. Avoid long parallel runs alongside power cables. If the cable must cross a power wire, crossing at approximately a right angle is generally preferable to running alongside it.
Step 6 – Manage Excess Cable
Do not cut excess Cable 1. Do not make tight coils or tightly bundle it with zip ties. Use large, loose loops and leave the cable relaxed rather than compressed.
Step 7 – Remove the Stock Antenna
Remove the factory antenna from the top of the handheld radio. Store it safely in case the radio needs to be returned to its original configuration.
Step 8 – Install Cable 2
Connect Cable 2 to the antenna connection on top of the handheld radio. The adapter should screw onto the radio normally and should not require excessive force.
Step 9 – Connect Cable 1 to Cable 2
Connect the interior end of Cable 1 to Cable 2. Make sure both connectors are properly seated.
7. Final Installation Check
☐ TRAM 1181 antenna is securely mounted.
☐ L-bracket is firmly attached to the buggy.
☐ Antenna is positioned as vertically as practical.
☐ Cable 1 is securely connected to the antenna.
☐ Cable 1 is protected from sharp edges.

☐ Excess cable is not tightly zip-tied.
☐ Cable 2 is properly connected to the handheld radio.
☐ Factory handheld antenna has been removed.
☐ All cable connections are secure.
☐ Cable routing does not interfere with seats, pedals, steering components, or other moving parts.
☐ Antenna is clear of locations where it can be easily struck or damaged.
8. Communications Performance
The clarity and range of the radio system depend heavily on two things: the antenna and the antenna cable installation.
1. The Antenna
The TRAM 1181 is the primary performance component of the system. Its dual-band capability, approximately 2.5 dB of gain, and no-tune design make it well suited for this installation.
2. The Antenna Cable Installation
Even with a good antenna, poor cable routing can negatively affect radio performance. Keep the antenna cable away from power wiring, do not tightly coil excess cable, do not tightly compress the cable with zip ties, protect the cable from sharp edges and mechanical damage, and keep the antenna connection secure.

11. Important Installation Reminder
The antenna system does not need to be complicated, but the details of the installation matter.
The two biggest factors for getting good communications clarity are: (1) use the proper TRAM 1181 antenna; and (2) route the antenna cable correctly.
Keep the cable away from electrical power wiring, avoid tight coils, and leave large, loose loops when excess cable must be stored. When the buggy is being towed or transported without the antenna installed, use the protective screw cap to protect the exposed antenna mounting connection.
